Mental Health and Life Insurance: Depression, PTSD, Bipolar, Anxiety – you still have options

When Life Insurance Gets Complicated: A Client Story

A few years ago, a new client came to me frustrated and discouraged. His old Term life insurance was coming to term and was about to expire. The renewal letter came, and the new premium was nearly ten times higher than before.

Not unusual. That’s the thing about term insurance: it’s designed to last for a set period, not forever. When the term ends, you can’t count on simply extending it without paying a huge increase. That’s why I always remind my clients – if you think you’ll need coverage for the long haul, consider whole life from the start, or at least make sure your term length is properly matched to your family’s needs. Otherwise, you risk being left exposed: a mortgage still on the books, retirement plans half-built, kids still depending on you.

Now, in this client’s case, life had taken another turn. Since his original policy, he’d been diagnosed with depression and anxiety. For him, much of it was work-related stress, but the diagnosis was on record. And when he tried applying on his own, he kept getting declined by different companies.

He felt boxed in. Companies kept saying “no” – leaving him with the sinking fear that nobody would ever insure him again.

Here’s the truth: conditions like depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder don’t automatically make you uninsurable. But two things matter most:

  • Stability. Being consistent with treatment, staying on track with medications, showing no recent hospitalizations or self-harm concerns.

  • Strategy. Avoiding blind applications, since every decline gets recorded and makes the next attempt harder.

This is where working with a knowledgeable broker changes the game. Instead of racking up denials, I quietly shopped his case with carriers more open to mental health conditions. We found the right fit before he formally applied – and he secured coverage. Not perfect, not instant, but enough to give him peace of mind and keep his family protected.

The bigger lesson? One doctor’s visit can change how insurance companies see you. That’s why the best time to put coverage in place is before health challenges arise. But even if they do, don’t give up hope. With the right plan, there are still solutions.

And that’s exactly why I’m here. Life isn’t simple, but life insurance CAN be – with the right help. My role as your LifeGuy is to help you navigate both – so you and your family have guidance, options, and the protection you deserve.
